On this day in 1948, the State of Israel declared its independence. Annually onYom Haz’Zikaron, many Israelis take the day to celebrate and reflect on their national sovereignty by firing up mangals . It is tradition to cook local foods like shishlik ; a meal which fills the air with a savory aroma as the flames are fanned with a nafnaf . Blasts from the ancient shofar, a trumpet made from a ram’s horn, can be heard as Israel’s blue and white flag flies proudly in the sky—as depicted in today’s Doodle artwork.
