Today’s Doodle celebrates Uruguay’s Independence Day, commemorating the nation's proclamation of autonomy on this day in 1825. When independence was declared, much of the region that comprises the modern South American nation was named La Banda Oriental for its location on the East Bank of the Uruguay River. The name “Uruguay” originates from the language of the Indigenous Guaraní people and means “river of painted birds.” Montevideo, the capital, hosts official Independence Day ceremonies including speeches from national leaders and recitations of the national anthem. With a duration of about five minutes, Uruguay’s national anthem is one of the world’s longest, but it is customary to only sing the first verse and the chorus. Happy Independence Day, Uruguay!
