Today’s Doodle celebrates National Day in Kuwait, a public holiday that commemorates the country's independence.
Although Kuwait officially gained its nationhood on June 19, 1961 as it ended the British protectorate, the date for National Day was moved to the same day of Emir Al-Sabah’s coronation anniversary to honor his influence. The nation’s constitution and parliament were also established under the late Emir’s rule.
On National Day, Kuwaitis attend parades, concerts, family gatherings, and other festive events to celebrate. Many historical sites like the Kuwait National Museum, Abraj Al-Kuwait . Extravagant firework shows are held at night to end the celebrations, all while people wave the national flag high in the sky — just like in today’s artwork.
