On this day in 1811, the South American country officially declared its sovereignty from Spain. On Independence Day, a sea of straw hats and vibrant blouses fill the streets as Paraguayans flock to parades and concerts. It’s also popular for families and friends to host asados — and break out traditional dances like the polka or galopera. Whether people are at home or in the streets, they’re probably flying the tricolor red, white, and blue national flag. As depicted in today’s artwork, Paraguay’s flag is especially unique compared to other countries.
