The day is celebrated by Portuguese people across the world and the holiday remembers the legendary poet Luis de Camões. Camões’s most famous epic poem is Os Lusíadas , which describes some of the nation’s explorations and achievements. On this day each year, Portuguese people celebrate their shared culture and history. Most countries host the national celebration at its capital, but in Portugal, the president chooses a city to hold the official festivities. This year, festivities will be held in Pedrógão Grande, Figueiró dos Vinhos, Castanheira de Pera, Leiria, and Coimbra. These cities will be abuzz with moving speeches from government officials, while crowds gather to cheer on a grand parade of marching bands and military personnel.
