Google Dooles 26.06.2024 02:45  Date: June 25, 2024 Today’s annual Doodle celebrates Statehood Day, or Dan državnosti, in Slovenia! On this day in 1991, Slovenia passed its declaration of independence from foreign rule and became a free nation. The earliest roots of Slovenian independence can be traced back to a 1987 article in the Nova revija magazine, where several scholars demanded independence from Yugoslavia. Soon after, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights organized a sweeping democratic movement that bolstered the nationalism of Slovenians across the land. In December 1990, an independence referendum was held and saw 94.8% of the votes in favor of sovereignty. On Statehood Day, the white, blue, and red national flag is raised high in the sky at Ljubljana Castle where independence was first proclaimed. The tri-color bands represent a united Slovenia, and its coat-of-arms symbolizes the nation’s lush landscape. Many attend the celebratory rallies within the capital, while others enjoy the great outdoors for some hiking or seaside activities. Happy Dan državnosti, Slovenia! Location: Tags:
