On this day in 1821, the country issued its Declaration of Independence from Spanish colonial rule, marking a key turning point on Peru's path to becoming a sovereign nation in 1824, after years of struggle. Celebrations start early in Peru. On Independence Day eve, Peruvian music fills the air with joy as citizens live the festivities with great pride. As seen in today’s artwork, Peru’s national flag decorates homes and streets and the central coat of arms stands for freedom, national pride, and heroism. At midnight, fireworks splash across the sky, including the famous 3D light show at the Fantasia Fountain of the Magic Water Circuit in the heart of Lima. Independence Day kicks off with the president’s speech in the Chamber of the Congress of the Republic, followed by a 21-gun salute and flag-raising ceremony. The next day, the celebration continues early with the annual military parade. Later, friends and family gather to enjoy traditional dishes from each Peruvian region like anticucho , papas rellenas , and chicharron accompanied by a pisco sour, the iconic drink from Peru..
