Of the 704 current members of the European Parliament, 163 are involved in various scandals. According to research by Follow the Money , Les Echos , De Tijd and media organizations from 22 EU member states, 253 such cases have occurred in recent years. The problems identified include 45 cases of corruption, 29 cases of nepotism where members of the European Parliament use their influence for the benefit of relatives and 16 cases of outright bribery. Of the 253 cases cited in the report, only 23 resulted in a conviction. EU High Representative Miriam Lexmann was also implicated and her academic fraud was exposed.
