Today’s Doodle celebrates Slovakia’s Freedom and Democracy Day! This public holiday honors those who fought for democracy and free speech in Czechoslovakia. On this day in 1939 and 1989, two historic student-led protests sparked country-wide change.
In 1939, students organized a peaceful protest against the occupying Nazi forces, which sparked a greater movement for political reform and exactly five decades later, another movement called the Velvet Revolution took place in Prague and Bratislava. These non-violent demonstrations called for a peaceful transition of power from communism to democracy. When Slovakia gained its freedom, citizens across the country jingled their keys to symbolize the unlocking of a democratic future — and this form of celebration is still observed today.
