Vietnam National Day 2021

06.09.2021 02:31  Date: September 2, 2021 Today’s Doodle celebrates Vietnam’s National Day, a public holiday commemorating the nation’s declaration of independence on this day in 1945. To commemorate the day that made modern Vietnamese life possible, the Doodle artwork depicts the Southeast Asian country’s quốc kỳ or national flag. On the day sovereignty was secured, the Vietnamese flag was elevated to the status of a national symbol. Contemporary celebrations of National Day are characterized by citizens flying the Vietnamese flag outside their homes or taking the day to travel. Although celebrations are different this year as many honor this day from the comfort of their homes, the message of national solidarity remains an important reminder that the Vietnamese community is stronger together. Happy National Day, Vietnam! Location: Tags: , , , ,

Rudolf Weigl's 138th Birthday

06.09.2021 02:31  Date: September 2, 2021 Today’s Doodle celebrates the 138th birthday of Polish inventor, doctor, and immunologist Rudolf Weigl. He produced the first effective vaccine against epidemic typhus—one of humanity’s oldest and most infectious diseases. On this day in 1883, Rudolf Stefan Weigl was born in the Austro-Hungarian town of Przerów . He went on to study biological sciences at Poland’s Lwów University and was appointed as a parasitologist in the Polish Army in 1914. As millions across Eastern Europe were plagued by typhus, Weigl became determined to stop its spread. Body lice were known to carry the typhus-infecting bacteria Rickettsia prowazekii, so Weigl adapted the tiny insect into a laboratory specimen. His innovative research revealed how to use lice to propagate the deadly bacteria which he studied for decades with the hope of developing a vaccine. In 1936, Weigl’s vaccine successfully inoculated its first beneficiary. When Germany occupied Poland during the outbreak of the Second World War, Weigl was forced to open a vaccine production plant. He used the facility to hire friends and colleagues at risk of persecution under the new regime. An estimated 5,000 people were saved due to Weigl’s work during this period--both due to his direct efforts to protect his neighbors and to the thousands of vaccine doses distributed nationwide. Today, Weigl is widely lauded as a remarkable scientist and hero. His work has been honored by not one but two Nobel Prize nominations! From studying a tiny louse to saving thousands of human lives, the impacts your tireless work had on the world are felt to this day—Happy Birthday, Rudolf Weigl! Uzbekistan Independence Day 2021

06.09.2021 02:31  Date: September 1, 2021 Today’s Doodle celebrates Uzbekistan’s Independence Day, known in local Uzbek as Mustaqillik Kuni. On this day in 1991, the landlocked Central Asian nation established its independence. Throughout the nation, Independence Day is celebrated with traditional music, dance, cultural exhibitions, and offerings of local food. The grandest of these celebrations is hosted in Tashkent, the capital and largest city in Central Asia. In the heart of the historic capital, green paths surround Independence Square, which is a central thoroughfare of Tashkent that traditionally hosts today’s most extravagant celebrations. Local artisans populate a bustling fair while folk musicians and dance troupes converge in the square for elaborate performances in traditional Uzbek style. A proper Uzbek feast complements the lively cultural events around the country. And, what better dish to serve than the national staple of plov? This traditional meal of rice, mutton, onions, and grated carrots can be found cooking in most homes as citizens reflect on the achievements of the nation’s independence movement and look toward the future. Trinidad Tobago Independence Day 2021

06.09.2021 02:31  Date: August 31, 2021 Today’s Doodle celebrates Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence Day, a public holiday celebrating the dual-island Caribbean nation’s declaration of sovereignty on this day in 1962. In previous years, official Independence Day ceremonies would occur in Scarborough, Tobago, and in the national capital of Port of Spain, where parades began their procession through Queen’s Park Savannah. Considered by many to be the city’s cultural heartbeat, the Savannah as it’s known locally, is the oldest recreational ground in the West Indies. Musicians would perform classic calypso hits, a form of Trinidadian folk music. Contemporary soca songs, a modern interpretation of calypso, entertained the many spectators who visited the historic city park seeking to enjoy the spectacle and celebrate their heritage. Daytime festivities gave way to the National Awards ceremony in the evening, during which government officials honor outstanding citizens of Trinidad and Tobago for their societal contributions. The night’s celebration crescendos with a grand display of fireworks at the Savannah as thousands sit back and enjoy the show. Happy Independence Day Trinidad and Tobago! Location: Tags: , , , , ,

Hari Merdeka 2021

06.09.2021 02:31  Date: August 31, 2021 Today’s Doodle celebrates Malaysia’s Independence Day, also known as Hari Merdeka or Hari Kebangsaan. On this day in 1957, over 20,000 people gathered at the Merdeka Stadium in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur as government officials shouted “Merdeka!” seven times in a declaration of freedom. This event marked the official birth of the Federation of Malaya which was renamed Malaysia in 1963. Situated at the geographical intersection of many Southeast Asian nations, Malaysia is a melting pot of several ethnicities originating across the region. The unity of different cultures is highlighted during the annual Merdeka Parade in Kuala Lumpur. This display of the nation’s diverse heritage begins at Merdeka Square and features speeches from national leaders, parades of elaborately decorated floats, and crowds of residents and visitors waving the national flag which is depicted in the Doodle artwork. The parade culminates in seven communal exclamations of “Merdeka!” to honor the original declaration of independence. Celebrations extend from the capital across the Malaysian peninsula and throughout its 878 islands. Selamat Hari Merdeka, Malaysia! Happy Independence Day, Malaysia! Location: Tags: , , , , , ,
