02.09.2021 03:15 Date: August 27, 2021 Today’s Doodle celebrates the Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova which commemorates the nation’s adoption of its Declaration of Independence on this day in 1991. Although the modern Moldovan state was established only 30 years ago, it was first recognized as an independent principality as early as 1349! Many celebrants across the landlocked Eastern European country enjoy time off of school and work to observe this milestone and centuries of Moldovan heritage. Official Independence Day ceremonies commence with the laying of flowers at historical monuments in the capital of Chisinau to honor the past. At the Grand National Assembly Square, in the center of the capital, Independence Day parades are brightened by citizens dressed in the national Moldovan attire which features colorfully embroidered, handmade clothing adorned with intricate designs. Moldovan folk ensembles liven the streets as groups gather to perform a traditional style of dancing known as the Hora while fireworks illuminate the skies. Happy Independence Day, Moldova! 01.09.2021 09:46 Date: August 25, 2021 ¡Feliz Día de la Independencia! Today’s Doodle celebrates Uruguay’s Independence Day, commemorating the nation's proclamation of autonomy on this day in 1825. When independence was declared, much of the region that comprises the modern South American nation was named La Banda Oriental for its location on the East Bank of the Uruguay River. The name “Uruguay” originates from the language of the Indigenous Guaraní people and means “river of painted birds.” Montevideo, the capital, hosts official Independence Day ceremonies including speeches from national leaders and recitations of the national anthem. With a duration of about five minutes, Uruguay’s national anthem is one of the world’s longest, but it is customary to only sing the first verse and the chorus. Happy Independence Day, Uruguay!
