Google's 23rd Birthday

26.09.2021 19:00  Date: September 27, 2021 It’s said that one chance encounter can change the course of your life. In Google’s case, a chance encounter between two computer scientists changed the course of the Internet and the lives of millions. In 1997, Sergey Brin, a graduate student at Stanford University, just so happened to be assigned to show Larry Page, who was considering Stanford for graduate school at the time, around campus. By the next year, the two Google co-founders were building a search engine together in their dorm rooms and developing their first prototype. In 1998, Google Inc. was officially born. Every day, there are billions of searches on Google in more than 150 languages around the globe, and while much has changed from the early days of Google, from its first server housed in a cabinet built out of toy blocks to its servers now being housed in more than 20 data centers globally, its mission of making the world’s information accessible to everyone remains the same. Christopher Reeve's 69th Birthday

24.09.2021 15:15  Date: September 25, 2021 Today’s Doodle celebrates American actor, director, author, and humanitarian Christopher Reeve, who is best known for his spinal cord research advocacy work alongside his leading role in four “Superman” feature films. Christopher D’Olier Reeve was born on this day in 1952 in New York City. He graduated from The Juilliard School and made his stage debut in the 1976 Broadway comedy “A Matter of Gravity.” After only two years of acting in soap operas and plays, Reeve auditioned to play the Man of Steel himself in the 1978 “Superman” film, landing the role ahead of 200 other aspiring actors. His performance as the iconic superhero in the four-part film franchise launched him to international fame, but he refused to be typecast in action roles. To this end, he brought a diverse range of characters to life both in cinema and on stage throughout his career. Outside of acting, he was an enthusiastic equestrian and athlete. In 1995, Reeve was paralyzed from the neck down due to a riding accident; these injuries led him to become an outspoken champion for those with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities across Hollywood, the nation, and the world. Reeve used his platform to bring increased awareness to topics related to disabilities and dedicated his life to driving positive change for the community. This included sponsoring bills to raise lifetime insurance “caps'' to better support people with disabilities and helping pass the 1999 Work Incentives Improvement Act, which secured ongoing insurance payments to people with disabilities even after they return to work. He focused on efforts to directly improve the quality of life for people with disabilities by distributing millions in individual grants through his foundation and serving on the boards of various disability organizations with this aim. Reeve also advocated for support and government funding of responsible stem cell research to further the knowledge and treatment of numerous health conditions, including spinal cord injuries. Calling on Hollywood to draw attention to other important social causes, Reeve led by example with his 1997 directorial debut “In the Gloaming,” a five-time Emmy nominated drama centered around a man diagnosed with HIV. Today, his legacy is carried on by the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, which he founded in 1998. Happy birthday, Christopher Reeve—who remains a hero to many both on and off the screen! Special thanks to the family of Christopher Reeve for their collaboration on this project. Below, the Reeve family shares their thoughts on the Doodle and their father’s legacy. We are so thrilled that Google is honoring our father on what would have been his 69th birthday. While the world first knew him for his starring role in the 1978 film Superman, it was his courage and humanity following the accident that left him paralyzed that touched so many people around the globe. Our dream is that his message of hope and optimism, of pushing to achieve goals considered impossible, and his example of striving to make a difference in the world will continue to influence people around the globe. His legacy lives on through the work of the . Photograph courtesy of the Reeve Family Early drafts and sketches of the Doodle below Location: Tags: , , , ,

Bunpheng Faiphiuchai’s 89th Birthday

22.09.2021 02:00  Date: September 22, 2021 For those looking to understand the heritage of Thailand’s northeastern Isan region—the nation’s largest territory that is home to over 22 million people—no other artistic phenomenon reflects its identity more than the poetic style of folk music known as Mo Lam. Today’s Doodle celebrates the 89th birthday of the Thai singer crowned the “Queen of Mo Lam,” Bunpheng Faiphiuchai. Born on this day in 1932 in Ubon Ratchathani Province of Isan, Thailand, Bunpheng Faiphiuchai began performing Mo Lam at a young age. Mo Lam performances were uncomplicated during this era—one male and one female vocalist brought stories from Isan literature to life by holding a musical “debate” accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of the khaen . After years of training, Faiphiuchai became known for her witty philosophical responses to her male counterparts and soon landed a job as a Mo Lam performer. By 1955, Faiphiuchai recorded more full-length albums than any other woman in the genre. She complemented her illustrious singing career with philanthropic endeavors such as promoting infectious disease prevention, environmental initiatives, and other forms of Thai performance art. Faiphiuchai was named a Thai National Artist in 1997 for her outstanding cultural contributions and passed down this unique Mo Lam expertise to numerous students throughout her life. Today, many of her pupils are well-known performers of Mo Lam which remains a foundational aspect of Thailand’s rich cultural heritage. Happy Birthday, Bunpheng Faiphiuchai! Thank you for fostering the next generation of Mo Lam performers! Location: Tags: , , , , , ,

Mid Autumn Festival 2021

20.09.2021 23:30  Date: September 21, 2021 Aligned with the rising of the harvest moon, the fullest and brightest of the year, today’s Doodle celebrates Vietnam’s Mid Autumn Festival or Children’s Festival. Why the Children’s Festival? This time-honored holiday falls in the middle of the harvest season, a busy period that limits the time many families have to play with their children. That makes this day the perfect time for parents to take a well-deserved break and enjoy time with their youngsters! In years past, dancers would bring joy to their neighborhoods while performing in symbolic garb and children would carry festive lanterns shaped like carps or stars to light the streets. Mooncakes filled the bellies of celebrants. While festivities are quieter this year as families celebrate at home, the joys of the day will not be forgotten! Happy Mid Autumn Festival, Vietnam! Mid Autumn Festival 2021

20.09.2021 23:30  Date: September 21, 2021 As the harvest moon rises into the early autumn night sky, thousands gaze into the heavens above—which can only mean one thing—it’s time for the Mid Autumn Festival! Today’s Doodle celebrates this annual holiday, also known as the Moon Festival. The unusually bright moonlight from the harvest moon in tandem with the seasonally crisp autumn air provides the ideal ambiance for families to celebrate and feast! As parents peel pomelos, a large cousin to the grapefruit, children take the skins and repurpose them for goofy hats. No Moon Festival is complete without a hearty serving of mooncakes, round treats that symbolize the moon and are traditionally stuffed with egg yolk, mung beans, and yams. These old-fashioned mooncakes aren’t the holiday’s only symbolic sweet treat—from chocolate-filled mooncakes to other non-traditional variations, this staple confection serves to remind celebrants of reunion as they honor their familial ties. Happy Mid Autumn Festival! Location: , Tags: , , , , ,

Chuseok 2021

20.09.2021 23:30  Date: September 21, 2021 Today’s Doodle, illustrated by Seoul, South Korea-based guest artist , celebrates Chuseok, a three-day, harvest festival observed across the Korean peninsula. As one of the three most important holidays on the Korean lunar calendar, Chuseok is a time for families to come together and show gratitude for a fruitful harvest with traditional food, stories, and games. Chuseok is also known in Korean as Hangawi, with “han” meaning “large” and “gawi” meaning “middle,” referring to a big celebration in the middle of the month! The date for this holiday, the middle of the 8th lunar month, was chosen to align with the harvest moon, which is the largest full moon of the year. Families traditionally start the day’s festivities with a memorial service known as charye which commemorates their ancestral heritage with enough songpyeon for everyone to enjoy. To honor an abundant harvest, holiday activities are livened with vibrant traditions of Korean entertainment. Samulnori drums up the sounds for talchum and ganggangsullae while celebrants play Chuseok games such as yutnori , and neolttwigi . Happy Chuseok, Korea!
